All students were rushed out of the Rec Center, including those in the pool when the alarm went off. Police officers were handing out towels to students who were still in their workout clothes.

UPDATE 10:30 p.m.:

Michi Karakas — an Emerald employee who was on a treadmill at the time of the alarm — says she saw flooding near the bike racks and boiler room. When allowed to re-enter, she saw the problem area was near the rock climbing wall.

“Everyone thought it was just someone pulling the alarm as an April Fools’ joke,” Karakas said.

Small groups of students were let back into the building around 9:30 p.m. to grab their belongings and go home. There was visible flooding inside the building.

The UO sent out an email notifying students that the Rec Center will be closed until further notice due to the flooding.

The Emerald was unable to contact a UOPD spokesperson for further comment.

UPDATE 10:42 p.m.:

All SRC activities prior to 10:00 a.m. are cancelled.
