All-purpose grilling guide for beginners

Whatever the weather is like, we will still be living in a state of denial by rocking bro tanks and breaking out the sundresses. This sudden change of attitude and attire can only mean one thing: The grills are coming out, burgers will be flipped and spring beers will be sipped.

For the newbies, it’s time for you to make a decision on what type of grill you want to use.

For the impatient chef, the gas grill is ideal. The only downside to going with gas is that you lose that mouthwatering, smokey flavor the charcoal grill offers.

For the methodical and caring griller, charcoal is for you. The only downside to burning charcoal is the mess it creates. So, for the great taste, you pay with a little extra grill scrubbing.

In order to pull this off a lot of grilling tools are essential to be the king (or queen) of the ‘que:

1. A pair of long-handled tongs are one of the most important tools. A set with gripping power is ideal — grabbing a steak can be quite a disaster with wimpy tongs.

2. A sturdy metal spatula is, of course, a necessity for flipping burgers or a fillet of fish. Be sure you don’t make the common mistake of using the short, plastic-handled spatula, which that can prove quite difficult to use over the hellfire flame of burger juice.

3. Also, if you’re into being a true sauce boss, a long-handled basting brush is key to flavoring and smothering your product in a multitude of saucy concoctions.

4. The final tool to the grill master is a long, stiff-wire grill brush. In my opinion, this is one of the most essential of all grilling tools. Take it from one grill king to another: A clean grill is a happy grill, and a happy grill leads to a happy crowd.

The glamor and popularity of rocking the perfect grill as its king/queen comes with great responsibility. If you are using propane, charcoal or small tailgate grill, make sure you are up on the know-how for the workings of your grill and your property manager allows for that type of grill on the property.
