“We need to find a way to support community building and trusting relationships between students and their neighbors,” Wise said. “But severe fines that put an insurmountable burden on students is the wrong way to go.”

During their meeting, both Wise and Zelenka agreed to work together on forming a restorative justice system that could lead to the fines associated with the ordinance being lowered for individuals.

Zelenka mentioned that he would work with Presiding Judge Wayne Allen — whose jurisdiction grants him control over the fines — to suggest a predetermined breakdown of how fines are distributed.

Wise is fighting for this breakdown to be created rather than fines being left up to the judge’s discretion, something Wise is uncomfortable with.
