Oregon avoided being swept by Arizona State on Sunday in a 16-3 win. With the win, Oregon is now 23-8 overall, 9-3 in the Pac-12.
Freshman Col Irvin (6-1) got the win for Oregon, going seven innings while giving up three runs on six hits with two strikeouts. It wasn’t his most dominant performance, but the offense certainly picked up any slack left by the pitching.
Oregon scored the 16 runs on 20 hits, with each starter getting at least one hit. Aaron Payne (4-5, 3 RBI) and Scot Heineman (4-6, 3 RBI) led the Ducks, but Ryon Healy (3-for-6, 1 RBI, 3 runs scored), Josh Graham (2-for-5, 3 RBI, 3 runs scored), Connor Hoffman (2-for-5, two runs scored) and Brett Thomas (2-for-6, 3 RBI, 1 run scored) all helped in the blowout victory.
ASU struggled from both the mound and the plate, using six pitchers, three of whom went less than an inning, and getting just seven hits in the game.
Turning Point. The Ducks led 8-3 headed into the eighth inning before a barrage of hits that resulted in eight runs scored. Six players drove in at least one run in the inning, all but ensuring the victory.
On the Horizon. The Ducks next contest will come Tuesday in Corvallis for a single game against Oregon State at 4 p.m.
