Mustangs race to third, sixth place finishes at track and field championships

The 5,000 meter runners led the men’s and women’s Cal Poly track and field team to third and sixth place finishes at the Big West Championships this past weekend in Northridge, Calif.

Chris Frias, Blake Ahrold and Sean Davidson swept the top three spots in the men’s 5,000 with times of 14:48, 14:49 and 14:53, respectively. Frias also won the 10,000, while Davidson came in second.

On the women’s side, standout freshman Laura Hollander won the 5,000 in a time of 16 minutes, 25 seconds, a meet record.

In the women’s 1,500, sophomore Hanna Edwards finished fifth, clocking in at 4:34.

In the men’s 800, junior John Guerrero finished in 1:50, good enough for second place. Junior David Namnath set a personal best in the 400 hurdles, where he completed the race in 51 seconds and took home silver.

Junior Jamison Jordan finished fourth in the men’s 100, 200 and 400 relay, along with Chris Nicholls, Paul Brown and Antwaine Miller.

UC Santa Barbara captured the men’s title while UC Davis took the women’s crown.

The teams will compete next in the NCAA primary round in Austin, Texas on May 23-25.
