Zone Read AM: Oregon track and field kick off preliminary action, Urlacher announces retirement

Oregon track and field will compete in the NCAA West Preliminary rounds starting tomorrow in Austin, Texas.

Oregon has 29 men’s entries and 23 women’s entries in the first round of prelims. The top 12 finishers in each event will earn of spot to compete at the NCAA Championships, which will be held in Eugene this year at Hayward Field from June 5- 8.

Both the men’s and women’s team are ranked third in this week’s USTFCCCA poll.

Ivan Maisel of ESPN discusses how Oregon’s quarterback Marcus Mariota and Texas A&M’s quarterback Johnny Manziel have a chance to easily make their mark in college football this year.

Maisel reports that with a year of game and leadership experience under their belt, both quarterbacks find themselves with a new outlook on the upcoming season.

After 13 seasons in the NFL, ESPN reports that Chicago Bears linebacker Brain Urlacher announced his retirement today via his official Twitter account.

Urlacher made 8 Pro Bowl appearances and won the NFL’s Defensive Player of the Year in 2005. He was the franchise’s leader in tackles with 1,779 and started in 180 games for the Bears from 2000-2012.
