The speculations and questions have officially come to a halt in the world of Oregon baseball as junior 6-foot-5, 227-pound first baseman Ryon Healy announces his departure for the MLB. After being drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the third round with the 100th overall pick, Healy has officially signed with the team and has agreed to a signing bonus at slot value which is worth a little over $500,000.
The first steps for Healy will involve working out with the Oakland minor-league instructors in Arizona and eventually moving on to the Vermont Lake Monsters, a short-season Class A club in the New York-Penn League. Before Healy can see some time on the playing field, it will be vital for him to get accustomed to the A’s system.
Healy is the first among his six teammates that were drafted to sign. Earlier this month Junior closer Jimmie Sherfy (10th round, Arizona), sophomore right-hander Cole Wiper (10th round, Texas), senior shortstop J.J. Altobelli (18th round, St. Louis), junior left-hander Christian Jones (18th-round, San Francisco) and junior outfielder Brett Thomas (21st round, Seattle) were all drafted, but have yet to sign.
In his last season at Oregon, Healy held an impressive .333 batting average while also posting 11 home runs and a school-record 56 runs batted in. Despite going pro after only three seasons Healy also holds the school record for most RBIs with 118 in his three-years as a Duck.
In addition to Healy, many of the UO high school recruits were drafted as well. The list includes: catcher Jake Sweaney (Philadelphia, fourth round), left-handed pitcher Matt Krook (35th overall, Miami Marlins) and catcher Chance Sisco (61st overall, Baltimore Orioles).
