Former University of Oregon closer Jimmie Sherfy made his debut for the Hillsboro Hops Tuesday night against the Boise Hawks. Sherfy, who was drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 10th round of the MLB Draft, had a strong inning of pitching. He struck out two in the seventh, holding the Hawks to a scoreless inning. Despite Sherfy’s efforts, the Hops lost for a fifth-straight time thanks to a quiet night offensively. The Hops were held to only three hits in the game and lost 3-0.

Coos Bay, Oregon’s Marshfield high school promoted assistant coach Josh Line to the position of head coach last week. Line, a former University of Oregon football player, is set to replace Justin Ainsworth. Ainsworth is leaving to pursue an administration position in Alaska. Line was chosen from a pool of five quality candidates due mainly to his time with Marshfield as well as his experience coaching in the South Coast Youth Football League. Line played at Marshfield his senior year of high school, going on to have a great career as a fullback with the Oregon Ducks.

The American League was finally able to end a three-game losing streak and take home-field advantage in the World Series by winning the MLB All-Star game Tuesday night. The 3-0 win against the National League saw a game dominated by pitching. MVP Mariano Rivera snagged three straight outs in the eighth inning to help claim the victory. Rivera, 43, had the distinction of being the oldest All-Star since Carlton Fisk back in 1991.The game also became a celebration of youth as a record 39 first-time All-Stars littered both squads, with four players 21 or younger. The American League pulled out a pair of runs late in the game, giving Jason Kipnis the chance to hit an RBI double. The shutout by the American League marks the first time since 1990.
