For 5 full innings it appeared the Eugene Emeralds (13-24) were on their way to another dismal offense performance. However, that all changed when Vancouver (21-16) decided to make a pitching change replacing starter Matt Dermody with reliever Tim Brechbuehler, a change that ignited the dormant Emeralds lineup.
Eugene proceeded to pile on hits against the Canadians bullpen and explode for 8 runs in the top of the 6th inning including a three-run home run by shortstop Felipe Blonco. The victory on Sunday makes it two in a row for the Ems’ after ending their season long six game losing streak with a 2-1 win on Saturday.
After the 8 run 6th inning, Vancouver responded immediately scoring 2 runs in the bottom of the frame, but the huge lead was insurmountable for the Canadians to make a comeback. Catcher Michael Reeves led the way for Vancouver recording 2 of the teams’ 4 runs.
Starting pitcher Jimmy Brasoban (2-2) pitched 5 innings allowing only 1 hit and striking out 4 before handing the ball off to the bullpen to finish the rest of the game. Catcher Ryan Miller finished his day off by going 2-3 with 2 RBI’s on the day.
With a victory tomorrow, Eugene will have won three out of four games on their road trip north of the border, setting the stage for a home series against the Boise Hawks. Boise is currently riding a seven game win streak making them one of the hotter teams in the minors.
First pitch is set for 7:05 pm tomorrow night.
