A power outage in D-complex on Wednesday evening nearly displaced approximately 225 students for the night.
Shortly after the power went out, residents were told by Public Safety and Residential Life to evacuate the building. The emergency lights in the building would only last for 90 minutes and Campus Facilities did not know when the issue would be resolved.
Residents of D-complex were given the option to either move into the Sports Center to sleep on cots or stay with a friend that night. Either way they had to inform Resident Assistants of their whereabouts.
D-Complex R.A. Bo-Edward Lawrence said, “It was really hectic, we didn’t know the severity of [the outage]. We didn’t know if the power was going to be out just overnight or for a week. ”
R.A’s from A, B and C complexes, as well as Regents, Park River and the Village came to help “dorm storm” D Complex to make sure everyone was out of their rooms.
According to John Schmaltz, the Director of Public Safety, the power outage was caused by a low setting on a transformer.
“I’m not sure if the low setting was something that was intended or not,” said Schmaltz. “It was a hot day and the kids had their AC’s on, and the combination caused a system overload.”
Four hours later, after adjusting the dial to the correct setting, campus facilities was able to get the power back on and students could move back into their dorms around 11 p.m.
Another mechanical issue on campus was an incident in the Sports Center that set off fire alarms and a response by the Hartford Fire Department at 8:40 a.m. on Sept. 15.
There was a malfunction with the water pump system, which caused a disruption with the heat sensor. Since this is an area where harsh chemicals are stored, the fire department responded to the alarm immediately.
Schmaltz stated that, contrary to popular belief, “there was no fire, no smoke, and no danger.”
The situation was under control by 10:30 a.m.
