Founded in 1913, the Anti-Defamation League promotes tolerance and understanding to religious, racial and ethnic groups, and is known today as the nation’s premier civil rights and human relations agency.

The theme to celebrate the monumental time for this organization’s Centennial year is “Imagine a World Without Hate” and will be celebrated on Sept. 24, 2013 at 5:30 p.m. at a reception in West Hartford, CT.

President Harrison was thrilled to speak about the University in saying “ADL has special meaning for me. At the University of Hartford, we are proud to share these goals in a diverse, energetic, and peaceful community of people from throughout the United States and around the world.”

The Torch of Liberty is rewarded to those who carry a tradition of community service, and have made an impact in their community.

Others receiving this award on the hundredth year are, the director of office for black Catholic ministries for the Archdiocese of Hartford and Catholic Chaplin at Hartford’s Capital Community College, Deacon Arthur L. Miller. His wife of forty two years Sandra Miller is also being awarded with this honor for being the office manager for small Christian communities for the Archdiocese of Hartford.

Lastly, Saud Anwar, who is the founder and co-chair for American Muslim Peace Initiative will be receiving the Torch of Liberty along with his family.

In a press release the Anti-Defamation League was proud to note, “The commitment to philanthropy and public service demonstrated by Dr. Harrison, the Millers and the Anwars epitomizes the Anti-Defamation League’s values and the ideals represented by the Torch of Liberty Award.”

Walter Harrison is not only enthused to receive the award in general, but accepting the Torch of Liberty on the Anti-Defamation League’s 100th anniversary makes this honor even more special.
