Hundreds came to the University Union Plaza on Monday evening to remember the lives of four Cal Poly students who died in as many months.

Faculty and staff from the colleges of Greg Inamori, Weston Crowe, Kyle Rhodes and Luke Powers spoke of the students for the parents, students and community members in attendance.

“My interaction with Luke has resulted in my remembering him as a kind, considerate and thankful young man with a sweet smile,” said Dianne Korth, Powers’ academic adviser. Powers’ father also spoke, and Crowe’s father followed him.

Associated Students, Inc. President Jason Colombini and Keith Humphrey opened the memorial, offering their condolences for the families and friends of the four students.

“Death is a part of life,” Humphrey said. “But it always catches us off guard when we lose young and talented people.”

Five students died since spring, and this memorial was the first campus service for them. Rising biomedical engineering senior Stefan Wagner also died in June, but was not included in the memorial per his parents’ request.
