Ducks get victory before season starts: Joseph Young cleared to play immediately

Dana Altman’s success of combining transfer basketball players with ones already in Oregon uniforms has been on display the last few years. Players such as Arsalan Kazemi, Tony Woods and Devoe Joseph proved to be vital players in Oregon’s run as a top-20 team the past few years, including a spot in the Sweet-16 last year.

Mike Moser, a post-graduate from UNLV, transferred to Oregon this fall with one year left in his eligibility and is expected to give the Ducks a big-time post presence down low after the losses of Kazemi and Woods.

Young, 21, averaged 18 points per game last year and joins a crowded backcourt with Johnathan Loyd, the team’s unquestioned senior leader, and sophomore stars Damyean Dotson and Dominic Artis. Both Artis and Dotson started for the Ducks last year until Artis got injured and Loyd was thrown into the starting role.

Young left Houston after his father, who was previously a coach on the Houston staff, was reassigned. Typically a player has to sit out one season if they transfer from a division-one school to another division-one school but they can appeal if the transfer was based on special circumstances.

The timing couldn’t have come better for the Ducks as they prepare to face Georgetown in two weeks when both teams travel to South Korea to play in the Armed Forces Classic at Camp Humphreys. The Friday night game on Nov. 8 will tip-off at 5 p.m. local time and can be seen on ESPN.
