For Oregon head coach Mark Helfrich, this week is exactly what the doctor ordered. A new opponent, a new week and a new opportunity to do something has become the epitome of “Win the Day.”
This week of practice has been productive for the No. 6 Ducks as they put the loss to Stanford in the rear-view mirror and focus on the task at hand: Utah.
“For the most part, we’ve had a couple of really good days (of practice),” Helfrich said. “I think our guys are a lot more resilient than we give them credit for. I think some of the older folks in the group that tend to lament things a little longer, but I think that was kind of one of the benefits, one of the negatives of that extra time with the Thursday game. A little more marinating on the loss, but we moved on.”
Helfrich believes that Utah quarterback Travis Wilson needs to be contained, and the Oregon defense has to remember to be efficient in tackling.
“That guy can run, man,” Helfrich said. “He’s one of those guys you start to see with his size and stature, you don’t expect him to outrun. Our guys are definitely aware of that … He makes a ton of plays.”
Helfrich said that the Ducks are looking to take advantage of turnover opportunities, such as interceptions.
“Their numbers (interceptions) have been up and our guys are hungry to make some plays,” Helfrich said.
Oregon’s main avenue for success this season has been the receiving corps, which has in turn shown the spotlight on quarterback Marcus Mariota as a Heisman contender.
“I think as a whole, those guys (receivers) have really excelled this year,” Helfrich said. “Last week, we had some breakdowns and those little things. That’s when you hammer fundamentals, fundamentals, fundamentals — they need to come up in a high-anxiety situation or a slippery-slope situation. They’ve done, for the most party, a great job all year from a blocking standpoint and in the passing game.”
