The wind was whipping in the Queen City as the Charlotte 49ers softball team (12-15, 4-7) played host to the Blue Raiders from Middle Tennessee (7-28, 2-9) and picked up two wins in Sunday’s doubleheader.
The 49ers sent Lexi Betancourt (10-8, 2.42) to the mound for the first game of the Sunday doubleheader.
Betancourt recorded six strikeouts and left eleven Blue Raiders on base on the way to the 3-1 Charlotte victory.
The 49ers were able to get one run on the board in the first inning on a Jackie Kleinsmith RBI.
Middle Tennessee tied the game back up 1-1 in the third inning when their leading hitter Laura Dukes was able to come through with an RBI single that scored Samantha Nieves.
Then in the bottom half of the third, sophomore center-fielder Jessica Plemmons hit a high fly ball that found its way right over the right-field wall giving Plemmons her sixth homer of the year and the 49ers a 3-1 lead.
That would be all that was needed as Betancourt settled in a held on for the 49ers as they coasted to victory.
In game two of the doubleheader, the Blue Raiders picked up an early 1-0 lead with an RBI double. The 49ers answered right back when Kleinsmith hit a two-run homer to take a 2-1 lead over Middle Tennessee.
After the first inning, Charlotte found themselves sitting comfortably with a 4-1 lead. Middle Tennessee found a way to tie it in the top of the third inning, but Courtney Carroll’s third RBI of the game helped regain a 5-4 lead.
Middle Tennessee would eventually tie the game again 5-5, but that was the closest they could come in taking the win as the 49ers finished on top 10-5 taking both games of the doubleheader.
Charlotte welcomes North Carolina on Wednesday, April 2 at 6 p.m. for the Strikeout Cancer game before hitting the road for a three-game series at UTSA followed by a doubleheader at Furman.
