“These stories are portrayed through the perspective of an obsessive, frustrated romantic recounting his hypothetical collegiate experience and his disorienting move into a non-academic world with the rest of his generation, and without a place to call home or any shoulders to lean on,” Livesay says of the album on his Soundcloud page.
While twenty-somethings and grads alike can surely relate to the transitional feeling portrayed in Livesay’s work, the significance of 183427106 also has strong ties to Winston-Salem and Wake Forest, referring to the year the university was founded and one of the area’s zip codes in the title.
Livesay’s songs continue this numerical trend with references to both his graduation year (2011) and 4th spot in downtown Winston-Salem.
One song in particular, “On Dressing Formally (Suit Up),” discusses the dominance of the Greek community at Wake Forest and the prominence of “suiting up” for formal events while keeping in mind the minority that would prefer to not conform to this social norm.
Written, produced and recorded by Livesay alone, 183427106 is certainly a labor of love. Unlike the dominant “frat rap” commonly released by college rappers, 183427106 combines chillwave and experimental electro elements, creating a more relaxed vibe that can be enjoyed in a setting as ordinary as a contemplative stroll after class.
Of his methodology to creating such an introspective piece, Livesay says, “What is important is that you are constantly discovering yourself, and in some way this record facilitates a continuation of that process, always for better and occasionally helping you to learn from past discretions.”
