Georgia Southern senior goalkeeper Katie Merson was selected as this week’s Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Week.

This week, the Sun Belt recognized both its offensive and defensive player of the week for the first week of the new season. Merson won defensive player of the week for her 2-0 record and 8 saves against Francis Marion and UNC Wilmington. Both games were on the road.

Merson currently has a save percentage of 88.9 percent and has only allowed one goal at this point in the season. She also has posted a shutout, which was the 15th of her career, with the 2-0 win the Eagles had against UNC Wilmington on Aug. 24.

Merson will be able to continue her run this weekend as the Eagles play Indiana and Auburn in Auburn, Ala.
