It became apparent once again that the Cougars still have plenty of things to work out with the offense as they fell 17-12 to the Knights Thursday night.
The Cougars had a strong chance for a comeback win as their final drive brought them to the red zone with a five-point deficit and one minute left to play. Sophomore quarterback Greg Ward rushed the ball and, diving into the end zone, lost possession just before the line to turn possession over to the Knights.
With the mix of sophomore quarterbacks Greg Ward and John O’Korn, as well as multiple dropped passes from the Houston receiver core, the Cougars completed only 22 of their 43 passing attempts. O’Korn was then benched late in the third quarter after throwing two interceptions.
Junior kicker Kyle Bullard was Houston’s MVP Thursday night as he was not only the first Cougar to score, but the only Cougar to score. Bullard opened the game’s scoring in the first quarter as he put the ball through the uprights from 39 yards away.
Bullard continued to keep the Cougars in the game as three of his four field goals were over 40 yards, including a new career-high 51 yard field goal.
