Due to a report of a person under a BART train at 4:26 p.m., the North Berkeley BART station was closed for more than an hour, according to transit officials.

Power was turned off at the North Berkeley station to investigate the incident, which officials said was not a fatality. The train, going southbound on the Richmond-Fremont line, rolled over the victim at low speed, according to Berkeley Fire Department Deputy Chief Avery Webb.

The fire department was called after witnesses saw a man jump in front of the train. When rescue personnel arrived, the victim was underneath the train.

The man was located about half an hour later when the power was restored and the train was moved. Firefighters heard the victim screaming and found him near the midpoint of the train past about four cars.

According to Webb, when firefighters found the victim, they split the train and extricated him from underneath so that paramedics could administer aid. The victim was transported to Highland Hospital in Oakland at 5:31 p.m with nonfatal injuries, BFD Chief Gil Dong said.

The station reopened at 5:57 p.m., and service has been restored between Richmond and Fremont.
