Oregon women’s basketball: Ducks sputter in second half, fall to USC in conference opener 70-54

The Oregon women’s basketball team cut an early first-half deficit of 19 points to six points in the second half, but never led in a 70-54 loss to USC at the Galen Center in Los Angeles on Saturday afternoon.

Jillian Alleyne picked up her 21st consecutive and 53rd career double-double with 20 points and 15 rebounds. Alleyne was 8-of-16 from the floor including 4-of-6 from the free-throw line.

Katelyn Loper finished with 16 points, while Lexi Petersen tallied 11 points and a season-high seven rebounds.

The Ducks (7-5, 0-1 Pac-12) trailed 23-6 with 11:02 left in the first. Oregon however, cut its deficit to eight points at halftime to bring the score to 37-29.

Loper led the Ducks with 10 points, while Petersen had nine points and six rebounds. USC (9-4, 1-1 Pac-12) outshot the Ducks 48.5 percent to 33.3 percent from the field in the first half.

Oregon was outrebounded 45-33 in the game, allowing 24 fast break points compared to the Ducks’ two. Oregon matched its season-high mark of 19 turnovers.

Coming out of halftime, the Ducks cuts the Trojan lead to six points, 45-39 with 15:12 on an Alleyne layup. USC took over from there, going on a 19-5 run of its own to stretch the lead to 64-44 with 7:32 remaining in the game.

The Ducks were outscored 33-25 in the second half. USC recorded 13 steals while Oregon finished with seven. The Women of Troy finished with five players with double-digits in scoring.

Megan Carpenter made her second consecutive start. She played 11 minutes, but did not score.

The Ducks will stay in Southern California to take on UCLA on Monday at 5 p.m. on Pac-12 Networks.
