Wasingthon’s Kelsey Plum recorded 20 points and Jazmine Davis tallied 15 points to power Washington to a 70-55 win over Oregon women’s basketball on Sunday night at the Alaska Airlines Arena.
The win snaps a three-game win streak Oregon put together with wins over UCLA, USC and Washington State. The Ducks fall to 11-12, 4-8 Pac-12 while UW improves to 18-6, 7-5.
Oregon’s Jillian Alleyne tallied a double-double in the first half alone, but scored four points in the second half, finishing with 19 points and 19 rebounds.
Jordan Loera added 12 points, two shy of her season-high. Lexi Petersen had 10 points, while Lexi Bando added six.
The Ducks closed the UW lead to four (50-46) with 11:12 remaining after a pair of Petersen free-throws, but the Huskies put together an 8-0 run to push their lead to 58-46 with 9:24 to go. UW closed out the game on a 22-8 run.
“Never got too far away from us, we just never made that one or two plays that just kind of kept us in it or got us the lead,” head coach Kelly Graves told Terry Jonz on the Oregon IMG Sports Network after the game. “I thought we had some opportunities. … It looked like we were going through the motions. That’s what happens when you go through the motions, you get beat.”
Oregon trailed 38-29 at halftime. Alleyne had 15 points and 13 rebounds at intermission.
Both teams were close in rebounds: Oregon had 39 while UW had 35 total. The Huskies forced seven Oregon steals and committed 13 total turnovers. Washington had six turnovers.
“I thought we did enough defensively tonight to give ourselves a chance,” Graves told Jonz.
From the free-throw line, Washington was 12-of-14 collectively and the Ducks were 6-of-13.
The Ducks led 8-5 early, but UW responded with a 12-0 run, 17-8 with 11:44 left before halftime. Oregon cut the UW lead to one point, 24-23 with 4:33 remaining, but the Huskies answered with a 10-2 of their own to make it 34-25 with 2:56 to go before intermission.
“It was a little of everything,” Graves told Jonz. “We’ve shown some toughness, and I don’t know if we did tonight. We need to dig a little deeper and say, ‘Okay. We’re going to get this done.’ And it just never happened.”
