Mocs claim No. 1 in D-II poll

Florida Southern College’s men’s basketball moved four spots from No. 4 to No. 1 Tuesday in the NCAA Division II most recent National Media Poll.

According to the FSC athletics department, the Moccasins, who are also ranked No. 1 in this week’s 11th regular season NABC/Division II Coaches’ Poll, jumped up four spots this week after wins last week at then No. 2 ranked Barry and at home last Saturday against Nova Southeastern and loss by previous No. 1 ranked Lincoln Memorial at home on Wednesday to Carson-Newman.

In a press release by Florida Southern Athletics, the last time FSC was ranked No. 1 was Dec. 18, 2000 and following that No. 1 ranking, they proceeded to lose three of its next seven games before falling out of the NABC rankings on Jan. 8, 2001.

In the Feb. 7 game against the Nova Southeastern Sharks, senior and All-American guard, Kevin Capers finished the game with a game-high 27 points and added nine rebounds. According to the FSC athletics department, with his 27 points, Capers eclipsed the 2,000 career point barrier as he has now scored 2,016 points in 116 career games as a Moc.

He is one of only two Moccasin men’s players to ever score more than 2,000 points in a career and one of six active NCAA players that has scored 2,000 or more points in a career.

Capers eclipsed the 2,000 point mark on two free throws following a technical foul on NSU three minutes into the second half.

The Mocs look to continue their streak to 11 straight wins this Wednesday, Feb. 11 as they host Saint Leo (12-11 overall, 4-7 SSC) in a 7:30 p.m. SSC contest at Jenkins Field House. The Mocs picked up a 71-66 over the Lions in Saint Leo on Jan. 7.
