Of the three singles players who traveled to Ojai, California for the Pac- 12 women’s tennis championship tournament, just one made it through the first round of singles play to advance to Friday’s bracket.
Nia Rose beat her opponent Lize Leenknecht from Washington State 2-6, 6-3, 6-4, while her teammates Nicole Long and Alyssa Tobita both lost to their opponents from UCLA. Long lost her match 6-0, 6-1 and Tobita fell 6-4, 6-2.
In the Invitational bracket, Oregon’s Marlou Kluiving defeated Nastia Vasyukhina of Washington states with a 7-5, 6-1 win. She will also advance to the round of 16 but for the invitational bracket.
Rose’s entered the tournament ranked No. 78 in the country, a seven spot drop from her No. 71 rank last week. Rose was defeated in her first match by Leenknecht, but as she has shown numerous times this season, she can made a comebacks. That’s exactly what Rose did to beat her opponent by three points in the second set then two in the final set, winning her opening singles match.
Rose showed her ability to hang with the best of them during mid and late season when she beat No.27 Desirae Krawczyk from ASU, No. 22 Klara Fabikova and No. 11 Giuliana Olmos from USC. The true freshman from New York made headlines with her wins over ranked players and her ability to remain in the double digit rankings for most of the latter half of the season.
Later today, Rose and Kluiving will advance to the round of 16 in bracket play, Rose in the championship bracket and Kluiving in the invitational, with the winners advancing to quarter finals.
Tomorrow, doubles play will begin. The freshman doubles team of Rose and Tobita will represent the Ducks at the No. 57 spot in the country for doubles. Their match is at 9 a.m. Long and Kluiving are ranked No. 65 in doubles and will begin their match at 10:15 a.m.
