A temporary agreement has been made to cover Al Moriarty’s name on the Alex G. Spanos Stadium scoreboard.

This means the scoreboard will no longer read “Moriarty Enterprises” while this temporary agreement is in place.

“The university reached an agreement with the Moriarty bankruptcy trustee to allow for the sign to be covered,” university spokesman Matt Lazier said in an email.

Cal Poly has been trying to cover Moriarty’s name since September 2013 due to his involvement in a Ponzi scheme. The university previously referred to the name atop the scoreboard as a “painful reminder” to community members who had been affected by Moriarty.

“The litigation between Cal Poly and the Moriarty bankruptcy trustee over the Spanos Stadium scoreboard remains unresolved,” Lazier said. “However, we have been able to reach an agreement that the sign can be covered until the litigation is resolved.”

Jeremy Faith, the trustee’s attorney, could not be reached for comment.

“The agreement to cover the sign was reached after the university agreed to allow the bankruptcy trustee an extension on an upcoming court hearing,” Lazier said.

According to Lazier, the university did not pay any money to reach this agreement.
