Oregon freshman quarterback Travis Jonsen will redshirt the 2015 football season after undergoing a medical “procedure,” UO head coach Mark Helfrich announced Tuesday.

The news was first reported by Andrew Greif of The Oregonian/OregonLive.com.

Jonsen, a four-star recruit out of Anaheim, California, was already set to redshirt the season, but that news became official Tuesday with Helfrich’s announcement. Jonsen entered the season competing for the fourth spot on Oregon’s depth chart behind graduate transfer Vernon Adams Jr., junior Jeff Lockie and sophomore Taylor Alie.

“Had a bizarre thing … nothing weird or anything, but medically he’s out for the year,” Helfrich said, according to The Oregonian/OregonLive.com. “Had to have a procedure that will unfortunately, he’ll be out this year and will redshirt and utilize that.”

Jonsen, who went by Travis Waller in high school, graduated early in time to join the Ducks early for spring practices last year. He completed 5-of-9 passes for 64 yards in last season’s spring game, including a 17-yard touchdown.
