In the first match up of a doubleheader, the KSC women would sweep the Maine Maritime Mariners 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-22) lead by the stellar play of senior and team kills leader Angela Silveri, who recorded 12 kills and 17 digs for a double-double. The Owls started the first set with a 7-0 lead and cruised to a 25-19 victory. In the second set the KSC women found themselves down 16-12, but rallied back in a 13-4 run to win the set. Pivotal performances by senior Alexis Michal and first year Jenny Nohara helped the Owls seal their first win of the double-header.

Head Coach Bob Weiner praised the first-year’s performance in her first start. He said, “She was fabulous. She absolutely ran good offense for us.” He continued, “It’s very heartening to know that we’re going to have her around for three more years.”

The second match up, against St. Michael’s College, was more challenging for

the Owls against St. Michael’s. In the first set, the Owls began with a 7-4 lead on the hinges of Nohara’s three straight served aces. St. Michael’s forced a tie at 10-10, but the KSC women would squeak through with a 25-23 victory. St. Michael’s dominated the second set, winning by a score of 25-16. In the midst of the Owls’ lackluster performance in the second set, Coach Weiner gave a fiery speech to his girls during a timeout.

When asked what he told his team during the time out, Weiner said, “I don’t think I told them anything different. We kept hitting the ball to number 10 (Candace Washington) the 6’0 middle. If we hit the ball at her she blocks it. How about we go outside of her.”

He continued, “But more importantly than that we made a defensive change. Riley Bunker (17 digs) who’s been our libero (position) for the past three or four weeks. She’s a freshman and she plays six rotations so she’s tired. So we flipped Leslie Hearns (junior) in the libero spot which meant Leslie had six rotations in the last two sets, and Riley still had three and it picked up our defense.”

Revitalized after the change, the Owls won the third set 25-16. They would seal the win after a competitive fourth set 25-22. Angela Silveri ended posting 13 kills and 17 digs completing another double-double, while Alexis Michal finished with 22 assists and Rachel Lamica had 11 kills.
