Student Government Association elections are around the corner and three parties — POWERHOUSE, the Hype Party and Project Red: Better Food. Better Wi-Fi. Better Parking. — have come out on top.
We talked with each of the candidates to get their stump speech on why they should lead SGA.
Vice president: Vidha Dixit
Describes campaign as: Experience. Dedication. Service.
Why are you running for president? It is one of the best ways for us to give back to the University that has provided us with such an incredible college experience.
Why are you qualified for the position? We have the most experience in SGA and truly understand how to effectively complete all of our campaign objectives. Through running the legislative branch as Speaker of the Senate, serving on university committees and in leadership in several student organizations, we have the leadership experience both inside SGA and outside to have what it takes to tackle the challenges ahead of us and to best serve the UH student body.
If elected, what is your end goal? Our goal is service. When we are elected, we are chosen to advocate for the student body, serve others, and make progress, not to just be warm bodies. We want to look back and know that we sacrificed all we could to make service to our fellow students our first priority.
Vice president: Omar Coronado
Describes campaign as: Hype. Commitment. Honor.
Why are you running for president? I believe SGA can provide a vital role in engaging the student body. With my vice president, we can achieve this and more.
Why are you qualified for the position? I believe I am the most qualified for this position because of my love for the University of Houston and the student body. It gives me energy and reason to succeed.
If elected, what is your end goal? (If elected), I want to create a better atmosphere of school spirit and student engagement.
Party: Project Red: Better Food. Better Wi-Fi. Better Parking.
Vice president: Rohini Sethi
Describes campaign as: Food. Wi-Fi. Parking.
Why are you running for president? I want to make the day-to-day lives of students easier by improving food, Wi-Fi and parking.
Why are you qualified for the position? I am chair of the Food Service Advisory Committee, the vice chair of the Student Fees Advisory Committee, the president of the undergraduate Mock Trial program and a senior RA at Calhoun Lofts. I came to UH after looking at every college in the country. I love this University and want to improve our campus.
If elected, what is your end goal? (My end goal is) cheaper meal plans, expanded and more reliable Wi-Fi and digital “spots available” signs in front of parking lots that track spaces available in real time.

- Rubio: Wants to overturn Roe v. Wade, but is vague about what specifically he wants to do to stop abortions from happening.
- Kasich: Opposes abortion except in cases like rape, incest or the mother’s life is at risk. Heavily criticized Ted Cruz for shutting down the government over Planned Parenthood.

- Trump: Vehemently talks about bringing jobs back from overseas even though Trump Ties are made in China.
- Cruz: Wants to impose a flat tax and abolish the IRS to help job growth. Also opposes raising the minimum wage.

- Kasich: Helped create jobs during Reagan administration as a congressman and has been successful creating jobs as governor of Ohio.
- Carson: Thinks the minimum wage should “probably” be raised, but thinks it will increase unemployment.
- Trump: Says it’s wrong for the federal government to profit off of student loan debt, but has no specific plan to fix it.
- Cruz: Has shared empathy for students with debt but voted against a bill that would have allowed student loan borrowers to refinance their loans at a lower rate.

- Kasich: Passed legislation as governor of Ohio capping college tuition and expanded funding for higher education.
- Carson: Believes people need to work their way through college.
