Ducks overcome 18-point deficit, advance to women’s NIT semifinal

Oregon was in hostile territory Monday evening, but still managed to overcome a seemingly insurmountable deficit to keep its season alive.

In front of nearly 9,000 UTEP fans, the Ducks defeated the Miners 71-67 in El Paso, Texas to advance to the semifinal of the women’s NIT tournament.

UTEP (29-5) led by as many as 18 points midway through the first half, but the Ducks went on a 10-0 run shortly after the three minute mark in the fourth quarter and held on for a win.

Oregon shot 8-of-14 from three point range as a team and received a 16-point, five-rebound effort from Lexi Peterson to propel it to its 24th win of the season. Kat Cooper, Lexi Bando and Maite Cazorla each finished with 14 points each, and Jacinta Vandenburg had 10 points and eight rebounds for the Ducks.

Cameasha Turner finished with 19 points for the Miners; Star Breedlove added 17. The Miners went just 4-of-12 from the free throw line and were outscored in both the third and fourth quarters.

The Ducks are now slated to travel to South Dakota for their semifinal match-up. A win there would punch Oregon a ticket to the NIT final, where they would play for their first NIT championship since 2002.
