Oregon’s season ends after rocky second half

Oregon women’s tennis is likely over after suffering losses across the board at the Pac-12 tournament this past weekend.

The Ducks were ranked No. 55 in the ITA rankings on April 18, but after failing to get a single win in their conference tournament, they will likely not be part of the NCAA tournament. The Ducks finished the overall season with an even 11-11 record (3-7 Pac-12).

It didn’t seem like it would end this way. From early February to mid-March, Oregon was on a roll.

The Ducks won nine straight matches, including conference matches, before losing nine in a row. Fans were left scratching their heads at what was looking to be one of the team’s best seasons before the downturn. Injuries and the dismissal of three players for violations left the team shorthanded just before the most difficult part of the season.

Oregon began the conference season with its best record in 12 seasons, picking up a 3-0 mark before losing to Arizona State in mid-March. Though the loss to the Sun Devils looked to be a minor set back, the Ducks were unable to recover in the remaining matches.

The rough patch was only made worse when Oregon took on No. 1 Cal, then Stanford, ultimately losing in a 7-0 sweep to both.

After the dismissals and the injury of freshman Daniela Nasser, the Ducks were unable to fill courts in singles or doubles play. This led to Oregon forfeiting one court in singles and another in doubles play for most of the second half of the conference season.

Fortunately for Oregon, none of its players are graduating this year. With just two juniors on the team and the rest comprised of freshman and sophomores, the Ducks have another year with the same program. The program will add Julia Eshet next year, the fifth ranked player in the state of Florida who boasts a 25-8 overall record. She will join Oregon next fall under head coach Alison Silverio.
