While college is useful when it comes to learning and enhancing your skills, the “real world” component of your education is important, too. Students often hear this, leading them to consider how to actually achieve this experience they are constantly reminded they need.

For artists, one way to check off that important resume box is to submit artwork for projects like the ones currently taking place through the Utah Division of Arts & Museums Public Art Program.

Designed to give an advantage to Utah artists, who are more likely to have a better knowledge of the area and can thus produce more relevant designs, the Public Art Program is accepting proposals from artists for three new public art projects.

The University of Utah Crocker Science Center, the Salt Lake Community College Westpointe Campus, and the Utah State University Center for Clinical Excellence are looking for artists to produce site-specific work at each location. Each of the three selected artists, after submitting proposals for one or more project opportunities, will work with committees and developers to transform their ideas into lasting works of public art installations that will be appreciated for generations to come.

The prompts provided to applicants act as inspiration for the three locations and vary as much as the locations themselves. When it comes to the wishes of the U’s Crocker Science Center, crosscutting themes and science-promoting work is requested, while the USU Center for Clinical Excellence is looking to create a warm, comfortable environment. SLCC’s Westpointe Campus is hoping to encourage a feeling of pride and service within its community with its finished piece.

With submission dates ranging from June 29 (for the Crocker Science Center) to July 8 (for the Center for Clinical Excellence), time is running out. Challenge your creativity, engage in a long-term project and make the most of this opportunity to share your artistic vision with one of these three Utah communities in a lasting way.
