The biggest question mark heading into the 2016 season is a lot like the question heading into 2015: who will be taking the snaps at the quarterback position? Despite there being five signal-callers on the roster, the quarterback competition appears to be narrowed down to either Dakota Prukop or Travis Jonsen heading into fall camp.
Dakota Prukop comes to Oregon in 2016 as a graduate transfer from Montana State. As a junior, he completed 62.8 percent of his passes and threw for 3,025 yards, 28 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He also rushed 158 times for 797 yards and 11 touchdowns. Against Eastern Washington in 2015, Prukop had one of the top performances by a quarterback in Montana State history. He finished the game 29-of-46 passing with 353 yards, four touchdowns and an interception. He also carried the ball 28 times for 196 yards and a touchdown. The 549 yards of total offense were the second-most ever accumulated by a Montana State player in a single game. Despite the Bobcats finishing in the bottom half of the Big Sky Conference last season, Prukop experienced a ton of individual success. When Vernon Adams Jr. was healthy for the Ducks last season, Oregon was one of the top teams in the country. Surrounded by an increase of talent this season, Prukop has an opportunity to have the same success at Oregon if he can recreate the production he had in 2015.
Travis Jonsen arrived at Oregon in the Spring of 2015 ranked by Rivals.com as the third-best dual-threat QB in the country. During his senior year of high school, he completed 122-of-224 passes for 1,692 yards and 14 touchdowns. He also ran for 840 yards and 13 touchdowns.
Jonsen was forced to redshirt his first year on campus after suffering a foot injury.
Now, he is back healthy and ready to compete for the starting job. There’s no question Jonsen is a talented athlete — at times, he outplayed Prukop during Oregon’s spring game. But can he overcome the lack of experience at the college level to lead one of the highest-profile programs in all of college football?
Both quarterbacks finished with similar stat lines in the spring game. Jonsen completed 15-of-24 passes for 188 yards and ran for 21 yards. He threw and ran for a touchdown as well. Prukop completed 20-of-29 passes for 190 yards and netted only two yards rushing while throwing for two touchdown. Regardless of who is named starting quarterback in 2016 — it is possible that head coach Mark Helfrich could audition both early in the year — the quarterbacks should benefit from an improved defense this season, leaving the margin for error a little bigger than it was last season. Either way, each quarterback is going to need to step up in fall camp and show they are the right person to lead the team in 2016.
