Oregon wide receiver Darren Carrington has been accused of injuring a man after pushing him to ground just hours after Oregon’s 54-35 win over Arizona State on October 29, Andrew Greif of the Oregonian/OregonLive first reported.
According to the Oregonian, the man, Mike Holland, said Carrington approached him and his group of friends as they were walking home from Rennie’s bar near campus early on the morning of Oct. 30. Holland said Carrington shoved him to the ground unprovoked. In an attempt to brace himself from the fall, Holland landed hard on his outstretched right arm. The fall resulted in a broken radius. His doctor told him four months is the expected recovery time.
Holland told the Emerald that he was in the middle of saying goodbye to a group of friends when he initially heard Carrington yelling obscenities directed at him. Holland, who graduated from Oregon in 2016, said he recognized Carrington and was “confused” as to why he yelling at him.
“When I realized it was aggressive, I kind of locked up,” Holland said. “I didn’t really know how to process it…I was so befuddled and more or less in shock.”
According to Holland, Carrington was saying “I heard what you said about me.” Holland denies saying anything to Carrington and thinks he had him mistaken for someone else.
“It was very confusing. I have no idea why it happened.”
Holland told the Oregonian he went to Sacred Heart Medical Center after the incident and filed a police report with the Eugene Police shortly after. He indicated to them that he wanted to press charges against Carrington but was told he needed to wait until after they had conducted their investigation.
“I just want there to be some form of accountability,” Holland said. “I don’t have a set agenda.”
Holland wanted to reiterate that he does not have a “vendetta against the school, athletic department or even Carrington,” he just wants there to some form of accountability. He also voiced some of his frustrations with the amount of time the Eugene police department’s investigation has taken, noting that offensive lineman Eddie Heard was swiftly dismissed from the team after being accused of assaulting a woman the same night that Holland was.
“I didn’t get assaulted and break my wrist for nothing,” Holland said. “If I’m going to be sidelined from my own life for four months and nothing will come of it, I just feel like that is a failure on a lot of fronts and it’s frustrating to be in the middle of it thinking that that might actually happen.”
Carrington, a regular starter for the Ducks, did not play in the first two series of Oregon’s 45-20 loss at USC the following week.
Head coach Mark Helfrich said there wasn’t a specific reason for Carrington’s absence early in the game.
Offensive coordinator Matt Lubick said after practice on Wednesday that the reason Carrington sat was due to his performance on the field. Lubick also said that the program was “handling the incident off the field internally” but declined to comment further.
This incident comes less than a week after defensive lineman Austin Maloata was dismissed from the team after being charged with DUII, reckless driving and possession of methamphetamine.
Fellow defensive lineman Torodney Prevot has also been suspended indefinitely since the start of the season while under police investigation for a criminal offense.
Carrington was also suspended for the 2014 National Championship game as well as the first six games of the 2015 season for violating the NCAA drug policy.
Carrington, a redshirt junior, has 104 receptions for 1806 yards and 13 touchdowns over his three years as a Duck. He has caught 35 passes for 493 yards and three touchdowns this season.
