Nicholas Edwards brought on as Cal football wide receivers coach
Cal head coach Justin Wilcox’s introduction as head of the football program came Tuesday morning, and he has wasted little time in assembling the rest of his coaching staff. Beau Baldwin had already been announced as the new offensive coordinator by the time of Wilcox’s press conference, and Wednesday afternoon Wilcox also announced the hiring of Baldwin’s former wide receivers coach, Nicholas Edwards, to the same role.
Edwards and Baldwin worked together while Baldwin was head coach of Eastern Washington, with Edwards filling in the role of wide receivers coach for three years. After coming to Eastern Washington’s football team as a walk-on receiver, he finished his playing career in the top five for Eastern Washington’s history in catches, yards and touchdowns. After a brief foray trying to carve out a job playing professionally, Baldwin returned to Eastern Washington as a coach.
Edwards is 27, adding even more youth to a coaching staff where he answers to a 44-year-old in Baldwin, who answers to the 40-year-old Wilcox. It remains to be seen whether it is the abundance of youthful energy or the relative lack of top-level experience that will determine Cal football’s future.
