A memo to our readers: Have you registered to vote?
To celebrate National Memo Day today, we at the Clog have a special memo to issue out to all of our readers!
MEMORANDUM
To: All California residents
From: The Daily Clog
Date: May 21, 2018
Subject: REGISTER TO VOTE
Have you registered to vote?
The California primary elections are happening June 5, and the last day to register to vote is TODAY! So, what are you waiting for? Some of you may be thinking: “Why do I need to register to vote? My vote probably won’t matter!” Well, we’ve got news for you! Your vote does and will matter — especially in the California primary.
What exactly are you voting for in the California primary? You’ll be voting in the top-two primary this June, which decides the two candidates who will qualify for the general elections held in November. The top-two primary covers “voter-nominated” offices that include the following:
- U.S. Senator
- U.S. Representative
- Governor
- Lieutenant Governor
- Secretary of State
- Controller
- Treasurer
- Attorney General
- Insurance Commissioner
- Member of the Board of Equalization
- State Senator
- Member of the State Assembly
Wow! Isn’t that a list of important offices?
Even if you don’t really follow politics, politics follow you! The way you vote in the primary elections will set the tone for the outcomes of many issues in politics today. For example, your vote can determine what direction our country goes in, in terms of gun reform, health care, criminal justice reform, and more!
Your registration to vote will come in handy during the general elections taking place in November, where you’ll get to cast your local votes — specifically for Berkeley City Council. For our fellow UC Berkeley students, you could also vote to get our student voices heard!
If you’re 18 years old or above, there really isn’t a reason for you to not register and vote! Let’s make our voices heard. We have a chance to influence the future. REGISTER. VOTE.
Best,
The Clog
