Utes Blitz Boulder in Colorado Invitational

The Utah Track and Field team only had one runner compete in their only race on Friday. Junior Sarah Feeny took the mile by storm as she earned second place with a scorching time of 4:46:03. Feeny now holds the fastest mile time this season for the Utes.

When asked about the mile race, Coach Kyle Kepler had nothing but good things to say about Feeny’s performance.

“It was really a terrific race,” Kepler said. “She challenged for the lead with a Colorado gal that ran and she really asserted herself well and got on pace early. I really give her a ton of credit, you know when it really got tough she fought hard and really battled the last five to 600-meters. You could tell the extra altitude was affecting her but she fought through it and really held herself together.”

Although the Utes only had one runner on Friday, the Utah Track and Field team had ten athletes compete on Saturday.

Cara Woolnough continued Utah’s successes in the mile run by winning the race on day two of the Colorado Invitational with a 4:55:33. Six of the eight Utes running in the mile finished in the top ten. Scarlet Dale took third place, Poppy Tank took sixth place, Sophie Ryan finished eighth place and Kennedy Powell came in ninth place.

The Utes finished strong in the 800-meter as well, with Sarah Newton finishing in seventh place, Brooke Manson in eighth, and Nicole Griffiths and Sadie Wassum finishing in eleventh and thirteenth place. Griffiths and Wassum earned new personal records in the race.

“We did a great job, we were running at the front of a lot of groups and we had some really good performances across the board,” Kepler said on day two of the Colorado Invitational. “Exciting weekend, we got a lot accomplished and it was certainly another step forward and there’s a lot to look forward to moving toward next week where we will be involved in three different meets.”

The Utes will run again next weekend in the Don Kirby Collegiate Elite Invite in Albuquerque, New Mexico, the Husky Classic in Seattle, Washington and the Boise Team Invite in Boise, Idaho.
