Black History Month 2021 Impact Issue: Editor’s Note

Black History Month 2021 Impact Issue: Editor’s Note

Last summer, the Black Lives Matter movement forced our nation to confront racial inequalities and demonstrated the vital need for systemic change — including locally in the city of Berkeley and on UC Berkeley’s campus. But uplifting Black voices should not be limited to the realm of activism. Black History Month is one opportunity to highlight the numerous ways Black communities continue to shape society.

In this issue, The Daily Californian casts light upon local activists working toward change, the varied experiences of Black students, the impact of Black voices in the arts and the movement to support Black athletes in collegiate sports.

The Daily Cal strives to document the rich history and contributions of Black community members in Berkeley, and we hope that readers will continue to recognize and celebrate Black lives as Black History Month continues.
