On Sunday. Sept. 18, the Michigan Technological University women’s soccer team lost to Ferris State University with a score of 1-0. Huskies standings now 3-4-1, 1-2-1 and Ferris State 2-3-2, 1-1-2.
The only score in the game was shot off the post and in by Ferris State’s defense Nikki May in the first period of the game. There were five penalties, three in the first period by Ferris State, and two in the second period by Michigan Tech. Michigan Tech had 9 shot on goals compared
to Ferris State’s 12. Goalies for both teams had 3 saves: Lauren Kubacki for Ferris and Gracie VanLangevelde for Michigan Tech.
“Were a young team still, we have 16 underclassmen… were still trying to figure things out, it’s still early in the season, we worked incredibly hard and we just didn’t get the break, we didn’t get the bounce to go our way and unfortunately we weren’t able to get the result.” Coach Ozturk said in a postgame interview.
Notable highlights of the game include a close shot on goal by Tech in the second half by Alicia Shatrau. Two of three shots on goals by Tech were attempted by middle Stephanie Yeager, one off a freekick and the other going out left, saved by Ferris Goalie Lauren Kubacki.
While both teams fought to gain an offensive advantage, the backline of both teams remained solid throughout the game allowing for very little shot on goal opportunity. Ferris State had a more adaptive offensive strategy that allowed them to break through Husky backlines for their one goal.
“That was a very competitive matchup and I don’t think either team really had much of an advantage.” Spectator Matthew Hoying said when asked about the game. “It could have gone either way and I think Ferris just found the opening before Tech.”
Next week, Michigan Tech will be playing two games starting in Davenport on Friday at 4 p.m. then Grand Valley State University on Sunday at 12 p.m.
