During their last season, the Webster U. Gorlok golf team, headed by coach Andrew Belsky, had to wander St. Louis looking for a place to play.
Their home golf course was closed for renovation, causing the team to constantly search for a regular place to practice and play.
“The biggest accomplishment last season was making it through the season,” Belsky said. “The guys took it all in stride but it could have been a huge disaster especially with a large group of new guys, but it wasn’t.”
Two of the players that finished last season successfully were co-captains Kyler Scott and Robby Meeh, who were both SLIAC First Team All- Conference members for the 2009-2010 season. Belsky said the most satisfying aspect of coaching the golf team this year is seeing his players’ improvement.
“The prime example of that currently is Robby Meeh,” Belsky said. “During his freshman season, Robby struggled with his game and never scratched the surface of our top five. Through lots of hard work and dedication to this game he was an All-Conference player last year.”
Belsky credits Meeh with the work he did as an individual to improve.
“The best part about golf is that you are competing with the golf course and yourself,” Belsky said. “Success or failure is never solely on your shoulders,” Belsky said. “In golf, the only person that affects your outcome is you. It’s a very difficult and humbling sport at times, and it takes incredible amounts of dedication.”
Belsky invites Webster students to cheer for the golf team, especially as they play the SLIAC Fall Preview on Oct. 5 at Forest Park.
“It’s a great chance to come enjoy an afternoon walking through the park and cheering on one of your fellow Webster students,” Belsky said.
