The Cal Poly baseball and softball teams both emerged victorious this weekend. The baseball team (4-0) took down Santa Clara on Monday to cap a perfect opening weekend, having swept San Francisco in three games, while the softball team knocked off No. 18 Washington 2-0.

It was in Sunday’s matchup versus San Francisco when junior catcher Chris Hoo connected with the ball with the bases loaded, smacking a grand slam over the right field wall to make it 8-3 in favor of the Mustangs in the sixth inning. The Mustangs never let up, holding on for a 10-5 win.

The victory carried to Monday’s game against Santa Clara, where senior right-handed pitcher Kyle Brueggemann pitched five innings and allowed three earned runs.

At the plate, the Mustangs were held scoreless until the fifth inning, when freshman Brian Mundall crossed the plate on an infield fly from senior Denver Chavez. The Mustangs proceeded to notch four additional runs in the sixth and seventh innings to propel them to a 5-4 victory over the Broncos.

Cal Poly will host its home opener Friday at 6 p.m. against Seattle in Baggett Stadium.

Softball

The Cal Poly softball team (2-8) split its double-header on Saturday with a 4-3 loss to Notre Dame and a two-run victory over No. 18 Washington.

Against the Fighting Irish, the Mustangs were able to draw first blood by scoring in the fourth inning. However, Notre Dame’s four-run sixth inning was all it needed to scratch by in its 4-3 victory.

The Mustangs regrouped in their second game as sophomore pitcher Chloe Wurst threw a three-hit shutout and kept the Washington hitter’s at bay. Cal Poly only scored two runs, which came in the sixth inning, but Wurt’s complete game and career-high seven strikeouts helped the Mustangs keep their lead.

The softball team will play No. 13 Georgia on Friday in the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.
