EMU to stay open late thanks to funds from ASUO Senate

Academic Director Harlan Mechling requested $1,987, which would allow the EMU to increase its hours of operation.

“We had a very successful pilot term last term,” Mechling said. “We stayed open until 3 a.m. with almost 100 students every night.”

Last term the night managers went around every hour and did a quick head count of everyone in the building. Because of this research, Mechling decided that it would be best to close the EMU at 2 a.m. instead of 3 a.m., essentially saving $800.

Attempting to make the project better, the ASUO is reserving all of the River Rooms for group study sessions, offering snacks through Healthy Campus and organizing a free yoga session in the Fir Room on each Monday.

“My only problem with requests like these is that we don’t get enough of them,” Sen. Ben Rudin said.

Sen. Jeremy Hedlund, who was in full support of the project, suggested that Mechling look into reserving these funds through the University of Oregon administration so that surplus wouldn’t have to fund it in the future.

“We urged the administration to adopt these costs so that things like this don’t have to come out of student funds every year,” Mechling said.

The motion was passed 18-0-0.
