Live music you cannot miss, but might, this March

Today, we want to point out some of the concerts around the corner that might fly under your radar. We’ve all heard that Mos Def, Flogging Molly, Passion Pit and Morrissey are coming to town, but they’re not the only ones stopping by. There’s a concert for the lover of any genre this month, and after midterms, we all deserve a night out!

Here are some options for those of you who want to:

Throw caution to the winds and dance on your own

Major Lazer is playing March 28 at The Independent in San Francisco. These DJs have worked with M.I.A, Santigold, Snoop Dogg and No Doubt. No doubt they’re spinning some pretty awesome stuff that is just what we need to let loose.

Feel some stuff

Joshua James will be at Cafe du Nord in San Francisco on March 5. This is one folksy guy who we think sounds an awful lot like Neil Young or Peter Green of an early Fleetwood Mac. He writes some heartbreaking stuff very, very well — good for some stress-relieving tears.

Rock out

The Virgins are playing on March 22 at The New Parish in Oakland (which is only a 15-minute BART ride away from Downtown Berkeley). These new-wave indie rockers have opened for Sonic Youth and Iggy Pop; if they like them, we like them.

Heartless Bastards will play on March 30 at the Great American Music Hall in San Fran. First The Black Keys, and now these guys?! You go, Ohio! Singer, pianist and guitarist Erika Wennerstrom is effortlessly cool and makes us want to sing in a dirty garage band too.

Represent

Hieroglyphics will be at the famous Fox Theater right here in their hometown, Oakland, on March 23. This is a hip-hop collective formed in the 1990s. They’re super funky and super nineties; do not miss this!

Murs at Slim’s in SF on March 22. UC Berkeley is familiar with this talented rapper. He showed up for a free SUPERB show last October, and we loved him! Let’s support him again (with real money this time)!

Or throw back

The Tubes will play on March 14 at Yoshi’s in San Francisco. These guys debuted across the Bay Bridge in 1975, and they rule! We’ve heard that they are quite the showmen, as all glam-rockers in the seventies were!
