The women’s lacrosse team came out big on senior day to beat St. Mary’s Gaels 19-9 today at Papé Field.
“It was great to play with our seniors on our home field one last time,” said junior Shannon Propst.
With todays win the Ducks improved to 7-7 and 2-3 in conference play.
Oregon was able to dominate on offense due to freshman Carly O’Connell on the circle. O’Connell set a school record of 10 draw controls. The Ducks had 22 draw controls for the game compared to St. Mary’s 8.
O’Connell posted three goals and on assist as well.
“For me, on draws today everyone boxed out in order for me to get those draws,” said O’Connell. “It’s a team effort…the team contributes to get those goals.”
Oregon showed patience on offense and passed efficiently throughout the whole field. The Ducks had seven different players score in the first half.
St. Mary’s eventually found an offensive groove and made a comeback, bringing the score to 8-6. However, the Ducks answered scoring five goals in the last six minutes.
With Oregon carrying all the momentum, the Ducks had the lead heading into the locker room 12-6.
Turning Point. The Ducks continued to control the offensive tempo in the second half and outshot the Gaels 31-24 for the game. Oregon’s 19 goals was a season-high.
On the Horizon. The Ducks have three crucial MPSF road games ahead of them.
Oregon will face No. 15 Stanford on Friday in Palo Alto. With victories, Oregon can earn on spot in the MPSF Tournament in May.
“We had a lot of energy today no matter what the score was,” said O’Connell. “We definitely want to carry that to our next games which are going to be against some of the toughest in our league.”
