About 15 people gathered outside of Agate Hall to watch the swifts swirl through the air Thursday night. Bystanders estimate that there were at least 1,000 birds. They gather just before sunset to dive into the chimney. According to one bystander, the chimney was shut down by the National Audubon Society to make it safe for the birds.
