Zone Read AM: Oregon track has strong showing in West Regionals, football adds to 2014 schedule

Thursday at the NCAA West Regionals in Austin, Texas, the Oregon track and field team was close to perfect, with 18 of their 19 runners advancing through preliminary races.

Highlighting the day for the men were Parker Stinson and Matthew Melancon. Both runners qualified for the national 10,000-meter race. The men’s team also had five different runners qualify in the 1,500-meters race.

On the women’s side, Jordan Hasay was unable to clinch a spot in the tough 10,000. However, she will run in the 5,000-meter semifinal on Saturday.

Jillian Weir finished 11th overall in the women’s hammer, earning her spot to compete at the NCAA Championships in Eugene.

The Oregon women’s golf team will compete in the final round of the NCAA Championships Friday in Athens, Ga. The Ducks are in 17th place heading into today.

John Canzano of The Oregonian reports how the size of Autzen Stadium poses a disadvantage for the Ducks as they continue to  solidify their spot as a football powerhouse.

Rob Moseley of The Register-Guard reports the Oregon football team will add South Dakota, UC Davis, and Southern Utah to their 2014 nonconference schedule. All three teams will travel to Autzen Stadium to play.
