Three Wake soccer players nationally recognized

In the last few years, Wake Forest’s men soccer team has certainly been making a name for itself. In 2007the Demon Deacons won the National Championship, and since then, Winston-Salem has seen some extremely talented players take the field at Spry Stadium.

Prior to the 2012 season, Wake Forest landed one of the top recruiting classes not just in the ACC, but rather across the country. Two of these players, rising sophomores Collin Martin and Michael Gamble, were recently nationally recognized by TopDrawerSoccer.com. A third Demon Deacon, sophomore Sean Okoli, was also recognized by the website.

All three players were selected as Top 10 players at each of their positions. Martin was described as a Top 10 midfielder, Robinson was slated as a Top 10 defender, and Okoli was mentioned to be a Top 10 forward.

Okoli’s exuberant offensive play led the Demon Deacons with 11 goals, which translates to a bright future for the Deacons as Okoli still has two years of eligibility remaining.

“After a slow start out of the gates to his college career, Okoli’s development has him on track to be one of the nation’s top forwards this year,” TopDrawerSoccer.com said. “With a supply line from Collin Martin and youngster Michael Gamble up front next to him, look for the speedy forward to continue to take another step forward this fall.”

The Demon Deacons hope to continue their successes from their largely youthful team this coming fall when they open regular season play Aug. 30 against Coastal Carolina. Ultimately, Wake Forest hopes to capture another national title, which would make it the school’s second in the past six years. TopDrawerSoccer seems to think the Deacons have some of the top talent in the nation right now.

And with their strong recruiting classes that seem to roll in every fall, another big trophy may end up in Winston-Salem in the near future.
