The story of the night was the Eugene bullpen. After Ems’ starting pitcher Vladimir De La Cruz gave up 2 runs in 3 innings, Jim Gabella turned to his bullpen to hold the Spokane offense at 2. The Eugene relieving core combined for 7 innings, 0 runs and 8 strikeouts.

The Emeralds’ offense got on the board early with a Michael Bass 1st inning sacrifice fly that brought in leadoff batter Ronnie Richardson. But the Indians were quick to respond.

Center fielder Jordan Akins slugged a solo home run off of De La Cruz in the top of the 2nd to tie the game up at 1. Later in the 2nd a De La Cruz wild pitch scored Marcus Greene to give Spokane their first lead of the game.

In the bottom of the 2nd, shortstop Anthony Torres slapped an RBI single to bring in Henry Charles and even the game at 2. The two pitching staffs would stymy their opposing offenses up until the bottom of the 9th when the Ems finally broke through to win the game.

Indians’ starting pitcher Collin Wiles got the ball rolling for the Spokane pitching staff by throwing 7 innings and holding the Ems’ offense to only 2 runs. Reliever Keone Kela allowed the game winning run and received the loss.

The Indians and the Emeralds hit the diamond again tomorrow night for the 3rd game of a 4 game series at PK Park. Spokane will send out Kelvin Vasquez who is 0-2 on the season, but has proven in his early career that he’s a guy that can get a strikeout when he needs it.
