The University of Oregon women’s golf team opened their season today in East Lansing, Mich. on the Forest Akers West Golf Course at the Mary Fossum Invite. In a pool of 15 teams, the Ducks finished fifth, shooting a three-round total of 908 (+44); just two strokes behind third place Notre Dame.
Pacing the Ducks were sophomore Caroline Inglis (5th) and junior Cassy Isagawa (7th), who both finished in the top ten individually. After leading the Ducks last season, both golfers opened the 2013-2014 season in the same fashion.
For Inglis, it was a memorable event as she marked her first top-five tournament finish. Inglis was one of only two players who broke par this morning and ended the event with a 54-hole total of 221 (+5) after shooting a one-under 71 in her final round of play. Despite carding a two-over par in her first six holes, Inglis finished strong with four birdies, seven pars and just one bogey to get below par.
Isagawa had a notable day as well as she tied for seventh place with a three-round total of 223 (+7). After recording a 73 (+1) and 76 (+4) on Saturday, Isagawa carded three birdies and six pars on the back nine to finish with a two-over 74 on the day.
Finishing behind Inglis and Isagawa was freshman Cathleen Santoso, who finished in a tie for 17th after carding a 54-hole total of 228 (+12). In addition to shooting one of two below par rounds of the tournament for the Ducks with a one-under 71 on Saturday, this was also her first career top-20 finish.
The Michigan State Spartans won both team and individual competition. The Spartans topped the standings with a 892 (+28) score, while Liz Nagel shot a 217 (+1) to win the individual medal.
The Ducks will take a few days off before returning to action at the Dick McGuire Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M. The event will take place Sept. 20-21 and will be played on the UNM Championship Course. Tee time is TBA.
