State Sen. Leland Yee, D-San Francisco, a UC Berkeley alumnus, was arrested on public corruption charges Wednesday morning during a widescale FBI operation, several media outlets reported.
FBI agents and local police served arrest and search warrants across the Bay Area, from San Francisco and San Mateo to Yee’s office in Sacramento, according to the San Jose Mercury News.
Yee, who is running for California Secretary of State, represents San Francisco and part of San Mateo County in the state Senate. He previously served as a California State Assembly member and became the first Asian American to be appointed speaker pro tempore in 2004.
Yee completed his undergraduate degree at UC Berkeley. Recently, Yee advocated postponing deliberation on a bill that would have asked voters to decide in the 2014 elections whether race, gender or ethnicity ought to be considered in college admissions.
