Oregon baseball grinds by Portland in 3-2 win

After Portland scored its only two runs via an error in the second inning, the Oregon baseball team was able to grind out a 3-2 win over the Portland Pilots on Wednesday afternoon.

Just one day after playing 12 innings against Oregon State, Oregon (35-14, 13-8 Pac-12) watched its starter Porter Clayton (1-1) pitch six strong innings, allowing no earned runs and just three hits. Portland (10-35, 4-17) scored its only two runs on a throwing error from Clayton early in his outing.

Oregon scored first as Tyler Baumgartner hit a solo home run (2) to right field off of Portland starter Travis Radke in the first inning. The Pilots would strike back in the second as back-to-back singles applied a bit of pressure to Clayton. A failed pickoff attempt allowed two runs to score later in the inning, giving Portland a 2-1 lead.

The Ducks were unable to get a runner past second base until the fifth inning when Shaun Chase hit a leadoff double to the left centerfield gap and moved up to third on a productive groundout to first base from Mitchell Tolman. Chase scored during the next at bat on a wild pitch to tie the game at 2-2.

In the sixth, Oregon was able to manufacture a run as Baumgartner scored Kevin Minjares on a sacrifice fly to give Oregon a 3-2 lead. Minjares reached on a leadoff single, moved to second with the help of a sacrifice bunt and was pushed to third after Aaron Payne was hit by a pitch.

Oregon’s Trent Paddon pitched three scoreless innings in relief of Clayton to earn his first career save.

Baumgartner’s two RBIs pushed his total to 33 on the year, second to Tolman who leads the team with 38 RBIs.

Up next, the Ducks are headed to Tempe, Arizona for a three game weekend series with Arizona State.
