Letter from the Editor

It’s that time of year again, when the brutally hot weeks of August make you cry out for the winter you so sorely cursed only months before, and when the imminence of Fall Semester begins to creep up on you like a predator stalking its prey.

Of course, the approach of Fall Semester isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Those of you with a strange Halloween obsession will be happy to know that haunted houses around the state are once again opening at atrociously early dates this year, while those of us involved in fantasy football can’t wait to implement the perfect strategies we have devised for this year’s season.

As exciting as these things may be however, there is one thing I’m certain all of us are more excited about than anything else: reading The Daily Utah Chronicle.

Here at the opinion desk, we are especially excited to bring you student voices from across campus. Do you enjoy keeping up-to-date on the latest issues that affect our campus, community and beyond? We’ll keep you updated on the latest — from the “Utah Man/Fan Fight Song” to Miley Cyrus. Do you love political, theological or scientific debate? You’ve come to the right place. Want to know the best-kept campus secrets? We’ve got you covered. Do you enjoy reading legal documents? We’re not too excited about it. You would probably make a good lawyer.

With some returning veterans and the addition of much new talent, our opinion staff is probably most comparable to the 1992 USA Olympic Basketball “Dream Team.” We hope our writers’ talents will be a slam-dunk for all of our readers and that we too will win the gold — the gold in your hearts.

Because this is a new year, we are happy to announce the introduction of several new elements within our section. With an already diverse variety of columns, political cartoons and the like, we have taken the opportunity to greatly expand our content in both our print edition and our online features.

One of the features we are most excited to bring you this semester is our new “’Tire U” satire section. Previously reserved only for April Fool’s Day, these satire pieces will now be written and published on a weekly basis in our printed paper. Still not satisfied? Take a trip to our website, launching later this month, to view our newly designed satire page, where you can find additional pieces as well as all of our archived works.

Another feature we are eager to introduce is our new “Feed U” page. The page is dedicated to featuring online lists similar to those found on popular media websites, such as BuzzFeed. We are confident these pieces will not only provide you with a glimpse into the lighter side of campus life but will also give you the distraction you need to zone out during that boring lecture or put off that assignment you should have started weeks ago. You’re welcome.

These examples are just a few of the new features we will be bringing to you this semester. Keep your eyes open for all to come, and as always, let us know what you want to see.

I sincerely hope you enjoy all that we have to offer this year. We are extremely excited about the quality and diversity of work we have in store for you. We hope you are too.
